Jermall Charlo Urges Rolando Romero to Target Devin Haney Next, Predicting a Decisive “Washing” That Would Derail Haney’s Career

Jermall Charlo wants Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero to fight Devin Haney next, and if he beats him, he’d be “washed.” Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) will have beaten both Ryan Garcia and Haney, ruining any chances of them fighting anytime soon.

Haney’s management isn’t likely to agree to allow him to fight a big puncher like Rolly, because they would know what would happen. Devin will disintegrate with the first big shot Rolly lands, and his career will be ready for the junkyard.

“Washed” if Romero Wins

“Looks like it would be Devin Haney. If Rolly wash him, then it’s like, he’s washed,” said Jermall Charlo to the media about who he wants to see newly crowned WBA ‘regular’ welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero to fight next.

“If you do what you just did to Ryan to Haney, that makes a lot of sense and a lot of money. As far as legacy-wise, I would say go back and stop Dev. I say Dev or Gervonta,” said Charlo.

You can strongly argue that Haney is already washed, even without Rolly beating him. That performance Haney turned in against Jose Ramirez showed that he’s too skittish to have a chance against any of the good fighters at 147 or 140.

Last Friday, Romero defeated Ryan (24-2, 20 KOs) in a big upset, beating him by a 12-round unanimous decision at Times Square in New York. Rolly had been chosen as Garcia’s tune-up opponent. They were supposed to face off immediately after the fight to announce their October rematch. Rolly spoiled everything.

Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) won his fight on the card against Jose Ramirez, but looked so bad due to the running, his stock dropped in the same way it would if he’d have lost. It’s being treated as a defeat because he looked so timid. It’s too late now. If Haney had looked like pure gold against Ramirez, they might have been able to salvage the Garcia fight for October.

Rematch Chances Ruined

Boxing fans would have still been interested in watching it due to Devin looking great. But with Haney’s performance even worse than Ryan’s, there was no way to put that fight on. It may have permanently ruined chances of a rematch.

I can’t see Turki Alalshikh wanting to bother with Haney after a knockout loss to Rolly. Why would he?

Some promoters like Eddie Hearn would still be interested in signing Haney because of his name recognition. He could take him over to England and give him the Conor Benn treatment with the careful matchmaking. However, he wouldn’t be a viable contender who would be useful to build around.
