Maple Leafs’ epic win matches history not done since 1963

It’s been a while.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in a playoff position they haven’t found themselves in for 62 years, dating back to 1963.

Their latest feat was a thrilling 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night in the East’s second round.

With the victory, the Maple Leafs take a 2-0 series lead, just like they did in the last round against the Ottawa Senators.

According to the NHL, it’s the first time the Leafs have led back-to-back playoff series 2-0 since 1963.

The series is far from over.

In the first round, Toronto went up 3-0 on Ottawa before only winning the series in six games.

The Panthers are the defending Stanley Cup champions and won’t be going down easily.

But the Maple Leafs showed their resiliency on Wednesday night in Game 2.

The Panthers went up 1-0 and 2-1. But Max Pacioretty and William Nylander had equalizing goals.

Max Domi put Toronto up late in the second, but then Florida made it 3-3 after 5:33 in the third period.

It took just 17 seconds for Mitch Marner to net what turned out to be the winning goal after the Panthers had tied the game.

And now, Toronto is going to try and make some more history and move deeper into the postseason.
