Former Premier League star, 32, rips up Peterborough contract for ‘personal reasons’

A FORMER Premier League player has had his contract ripped up in League One.

Peterborough United announced their retained list and the ex-Aston Villa ace was not included.

Jed Steer joined Peterborough last year in January after completing a 10-year stint at Villa.

Steer, 32, linked up with Posh on a short-term deal but put pen to paper on a new two-year contract last summer.

Nevertheless, the goalkeeper asked the club to “cancel” his contract so that he can leave.

The club confirmed the ex-England youth international wanted to depart for “personal reasons”.

Peterborough announced: “Goalkeeper Jed Steer has requested that the final year of his contract be cancelled due to personal reasons.”

Steer played 28 times with Peterborough this season before his decision to leave.

He saved two penalties against Wrexham to help Posh reach this season’s EFL Trophy final at Wembley and helped them beat Birmingham City in the final to make it back-to-back wins.

Steer’s career started in 2009 with Norwich, where he also spent six years in the academy.

However, the keeper only managed two senior appearances with the Canaries.

And that led to two different loan stints for the shot-stopper to Yeovil Town and Cambridge United.

And thus he moved to Villa in 2013, but was also loaned out five times.

Steer played for Doncaster Rovers, Yeovil, Huddersfield, Charlton and Luton.

The goalie managed a total of 36 appearances during his decade-long spell at Villa Park.
