Raiders reveal their plans for Julian Edelman-like rookie Tommy Mellott

If you listen to the Las Vegas Raiders talk, you’d think they got one of the best players in the draft in the sixth round.

Of course, that’d be a familiar narrative to the team’s famous minority owner, Tom Brady.

But no, we’re talking about Tommy Mellott, who was a star quarterback at the FCS level at Montana State.

The Raiders’ college scouting director, Brandon Yeargan, spoke with the Las Vegas Review-Journal to lay out Mellott’s expectations.

“I wouldn’t pigeonhole him right now,” Yeargan said. “I would say we view him as a receiver that’s going to have a lot of value in the kicking game, potentially as a returner, as a cover player, maybe play some quarterback, too. We’re looking really as an athlete/receiver, but he’s a unique guy.”

The Raiders also got a long-term quarterback in the sixth round, two picks after Mellott, with North Dakota State’s Cam Miller.

Mellott has been compared to Julian Edelman, in part due to the Brady connection. Edelman was a college QB at Kent State before developing into one of the NFL’s best slot receivers.

Even if Mellott is just a tiny bit of Edelman, he’s a good pick for the Raiders.

And if he can get close to that level? Las Vegas would absolutely love it.
