The Pittsburgh Steelers had their second crack at Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders with the No. 83 overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft. However, the team did not take him.
Instead, the Steelers opted for Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson, which addresses a huge need for Pittsburgh.
The Steelers saw Najee Harris depart in free agency and didn’t have a sure starter on the roster, as Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell are both better suited as complementary backs. Now, Johnson will compete for a starting job.
Why did Steelers pass on Shedeur Sanders again?
At this point, it’s abundantly clear that the Steelers simply don’t think highly of the Colorado signal-caller, and neither does any other team in the NFL, apparently. So much for the pre-draft praise head coach Mike Tomlin gave Sanders.
It’ll be interesting to see if Sanders falls past the third round, also. The Steelers are on the clock next at No. 123 overall in the fourth round, where they may very well get another crack at Sanders. We won’t know if they take him until tomorrow, assuming he doesn’t go later in the third round.
Meanwhile, the Steelers’ dependence on Aaron Rodgers grows. The good news is, things appear to be moving in a positive direction based on recent updates.

- Round 5, Pick No. 156
- Round 6, Pick No. 185 (from SEA)
