Has Devin Haney’s Fragile Chin Met Its Match in the Power-Punching Jose Ramirez Despite Shane Mosley’s Training Efforts?

Devin Haney is training with Shane Mosley in Big Bear, California, to prepare himself for his fight against Jose Ramirez in 15 days on May 2nd at Times Square in New York City.

Teaming up with the retired former three-division world champion Mosley is a sign that Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) knows what he’s up against, fighting 2012 U.S Olympian Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs), who can punch a little.

Ramirez, 32, has been working on his power game with trainer Robert Garcia for this fight, hoping to score a knockout. The former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Ramirez’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, believes that Haney is a “shot” fighter from his three-knockdown loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20th last year. If Oscar is right, Devin is not going to last long against Ramirez.

Sinking Ship?

Mosley is a good trainer, but he can’t transform Haney into a lion by magically giving him power that doesn’t exist or fix his fragile, glass-like chin to help him withstand the blows that Ramirez is going to be hitting him with.

It could be that Mosley is just the latest captain of Devin’s sinking ship, and he can’t steer him away from the storm that is coming at him on May 2nd. Haney might as well leave Dad, Bill Haney, at the helm, trying to navigate from the pilothouse through the hurricane. If he loses, it’ll be interesting to hear what Bill comes up with.

Haney has a couple of things going against him in this fight with Ramirez. He’s been inactive for a solid year, and he’s coming off a bad loss. Being inactive might not be a big deal if that’s all Devin was dealing with, but the fact that he was hurt on four separate occasions in his loss to Kingry. The cumulative beating that Haney took could leave him vulnerable to Ramirez’s punches.

“We’re [still] undefeated in the ring,” said Bill Haney to Cigar Talk, reveling in Devin Haney’s loss being erased and him now still Unbeaten heading into his match against Jose Ramirez in 15 days on May 2nd at Times Square in New York City.
