Jose Ramirez’s trainer, Robert Garcia, says Team Devin Haney wants the weight increased from 144 to 147 for the Haney-Ramirez co-feature battle on the Fatal Fury card on May 2nd in Times Square in New York City.
Robert says he’s fine with their request and feels the extra weight will benefit Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) more, making him hit harder. The former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Ramirez looks noticeably stronger in training camp for this fight, hitting with knockout power that could give Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) problems.
Avoiding The Weight Cut
It’s unsurprising that Haney, 26, wants the weight to be increased to the welterweight limit at 147 because with him rehydrating to the mid-160s, it’s a lot of weight for him to take off fight week. Devin should have been fighting at welterweight or junior middleweight years ago with his massive frame.
With the big-money rematch with Ryan Garcia being at stake for the May 2nd fight, Devin can’t afford to be less than 100%, looking weight-drained and physically depleted during the contest with the 2012 U.S Olympian Ramirez.
Haney vs. Ramirez is the co-feature bout on the Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero card on May 2nd. The event will be shown live on DAZN PPV.
“Jose gets motivated when he hears the Mexicans cheering him. Ramirez signed his contract for 144, but I believe now, they’re asking for 147, which is fine with us,” said trainer Robert Garcia to K.O. Ramirez, 32, is going to be like a bull inside the ring, going after Haney, looking to finish when Kingry started last year on April 20th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Ryan didn’t finish Haney due to stamina issues, but Ramirez has superior cardio and will continue to pour it on for the entire fight. If he gets Haney in trouble, he’ll finish him.
Devin’s Holding Pattern
Trainer Robert Garcia will obviously be working on a strategy for Ramirez to deal with Haney’s constant holding. Devin used nonstop clinching against Ryan to keep from being knocked out in the seventh round. If Ryan knew how to effectively neutralize that tactic, he would have stopped Haney in that round.
“He’s a tall guy and has been at 140 for so many years. I think at 147, he’ll be so much stronger,” said trainer Robert about Ramirez. “Not having to cut those last seven pounds, his confidence and his body is going to feel so comfortable that he’s going to go out and swing.
“I think that’s going to benefit Jose. Devin Haney is also going to be comfortable because he’s a big boy, too,” said Robert Garcia about Ramirez benefiting more than Haney from the weight increase.
