Saints are the ‘dream’ destination for a top NFL draft prospect this year

There is no clear consensus on who the best player in this year’s NFL draft class is. Some feel it is Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter, while others may feel it is Colorado hybrid wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter.

But most people agree that Cam Ward of the Miami Hurricanes is the best overall quarterback prospect. There is a growing sentiment that he will be the No. 1 overall pick by the Tennessee Titans, a team that is starving for a legitimate franchise quarterback.

But it isn’t a lock that he will be headed to Tennessee. While it seems unlikely to happen, he recently said that playing for the New Orleans Saints would be a dream scenario for him.

“I loved watching Drew Brees and (receiver Marques) Colston out there,” Ward said. “It would be a dream of mine to play for them, if I get a chance someday.”

However, he added that doing so is not his “focus right now.”

The Saints, who went 5-12 and finished last in the NFC South last season, have the No. 9 pick in April’s draft. It would take a massive trade offer by them to land the No. 1 pick, and it is unknown how badly they would like to land that pick.

Ward, who grew up in southeast Texas, threw for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns last season with the Hurricanes. He won the Manning Award and Davey O’Brien Award and was named the ACC Player of the Year while finishing fourth in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy.
