Boxing Results: Kambosos Jr. Wins Against Wyllie, then Challenges Hitchins Despite Hearn’s Doubts

George Kambosos Jr. (22-3, 10 KOs) looked physically torn up around the face, winning a tougher-than-expected 12-round unanimous decision against his fill-in opponent, Jake Wyllie (16-2, 15 KOs), on Saturday night in the main event at the Qudos Arena in Sydney, Australia.

Kambosos, 31, dominated the first half of the contest but suffered a bad cut and struggled the rest of the way from the pressure being put on him by the 24-year-old Wyllie.

Touch Victory

Boxing News 24 had it 9-3 in favor of Kambosos Jr. He did well early but was falling apart from the pace forced on him by the much younger Wyllie. It had nothing to do with the cut that the little ‘Emperor’ sustained.

The former unified lightweight champion Kambosos Jr. did enough to get a decisive win, but it was far from the performance he needed to make a stake that he deserves a world title shot next against IBF light welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins in June.

Deserved or not, Kambosos will be getting the title shot against Hitchins, but it’s going to be a one-sided affair in favor of the New Yorker. Even promoter Eddie Hearn acknowledged afterward that Kambosos would not beat Hitchins from the way he looked tonight.

“I thought he looked great for the first five or six rounds, but then he got the head clash and unraveled a little bit. Wyllie came on strong,” said Eddie Hearn to Fighthype, talking about George Kambosos Jr’s win over Jake Wyllie tonight in Sydney.

“For me, he can be competitive against Hitchins. But after a performance like that against Hitchins, he won’t beat him. Hitchins is an elite fighter. Jake Wyllie is a tremendous young prospect. It’s going to be interesting to see how he comes through but for me, Hitchins vs. Kambosos is a tremendous fight.”

So there it is. Hearn is making it clear that he doesn’t see Kambosos winning against Hitchins, but fans saw how average George looked for themselves tonight. He’s not beating Hitchins or any of the top 15 contenders in the 140-lb rankings looking like this. You could pick a contender from the bottom of the rankings, and Kambosos wouldn’t win.

Hitchins Callout

“Sh**-chins won’t fight nowhere near as hard as him [Jake Wyllie]. Hitchins, let’s go! I want to fight you toe-to-toe. I know Hitchins is a tip-tap kind of guy and he will try and hit and run. I’m a warrior,” said Kambosos Jr, calling out IBF light welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins afterward.
