The Arizona Cardinals have done a decent job this season in bolstering their roster to increase their chances of making the playoffs next season.
They improved what was a mediocre defense last season by signing pass rusher Josh Sweat away from the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and adding veteran defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson. Arizona also brought in quarterback Jacoby Brissett to back up Kyler Murray.
Arizona’s offensive line was already solid in 2024, but it made a move on Friday to bolster its depth there by signing Royce Newman. It also brought in Jaylon Jones, a young defensive back who spent the last three seasons with the Chicago Bears.
“Offensive lineman Royce Newman signed a one-year deal on Friday to join the Cardinals after a brief stint in Tampa Bay,” wrote Zach Gershman. “Before he played for the [Tampa Bay] Buccaneers, the offensive guard spent three seasons with the Packers.
“The Cardinals also inked a one-year deal with cornerback Jaylon Jones, a move that should make quarterback Kyler Murray happy. The two were teammates at Allen High School in Texas.”
Newman, a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of the University of Mississippi, spent his first three seasons in the league with the Green Bay Packers. He played just one game last season while with the Buccaneers.
Jones, who also played his college ball at Mississippi, has made five starts in 41 games during his three pro seasons, all of which were spent with the Chicago Bears. He has career totals of four passes defended, one quarterback hit, one tackle for loss, one forced fumble and 85 total tackles (64 solo).
