The New York Giants are still waiting to take their next step at the quarterback position, and the 2025 NFL Draft is approaching quickly.
With just over a month until the offseason’s biggest event arrives, the Giants currently hold the No. 3 overall pick in hopes of landing a franchise quarterback. However, there are a handful of other storylines to keep an eye on as well.
One of them involves star pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux and the team’s decision to exercise the fifth-year option in his rookie contract. While it’s more likely the Giants pick up the $16 million option for the 2026 season, there’s also a chance he’s their best asset in a potential trade, per Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus.
“The former fifth-overall pick displayed encouraging signs last season with a 72.0 PFF pass-rushing grade, but he saw time on only 593 snaps. Reports have indicated that Thibodeaux’s fifth-year option will be picked up, which would probably nix a trade, but it’s possible that general manager Joe Schoen could deal Thibodeaux, not worry about the option and draft someone instead — such as Penn State‘s Abdul Carter at third overall,” Locker wrote.
It would be a surprising move for the Giants to trade Thibodeaux away, but having Carter as a consolation prize isn’t the worst scenario in the world. With that said, it seems highly unlikely the Giants would consider Carter over quarterbacks Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders if either player is available at No. 3.
A wrist injury that required surgery limited Thibodeaux to 12 games during his third season, but he was on his way to the best campaign of his career. His 42 total pressures were just six fewer than his career-high mark, and he was on pace for 59 total pressures had he played a full season, per Next Gen Stats.
It’s unlikely the Giants will trade Thibodeaux away with two years left on his rookie deal, but never say never when it comes to the NFL.
