Fundora’s Year Lost Chasing Spence, Reveals ‘Wishy-Washy’ Situation Amidst Betting Ticket Boast and Vanishing Dates

Fundora’s Year Lost Chasing Spence, Reveals ‘Wishy-Washy’ Situation Amidst Betting Ticket Boast and Vanishing Dates

WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora reveals that his fight with Errol Spence never took place due to the dates constantly changing during the last year. Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) says he was “ready” the whole time, but it didn’t happen.

12 Months Idle

Fundora was inactive for a year, trying to get the Spence fight and winding up empty-handed. Interestingly, he says he’s still interested in fighting Errol. He’s not given up. I guess some people never learn.

Fundora will make his first appearance in 12 months this Saturday, March 22nd, defending his WBC and WBO 154-lb belts against Chordale Booker (23-1, 11 KOs) at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

Sounding wishy-washy, ‘The Towering Inferno’ Fundora didn’t want to explain why the clash with Spence (28-1, 22 KOs), but it may have been Errol’s side. The recently turned 35-year-old Spence has fought just three times since his terrible car crash on October 10, 2019, in Dallas, Texas.

Errol has not looked like the same fighter since that crash, which destroyed his expensive Ferrari Spyder. His ninth-round knockout loss to Terence Crawford two years ago, on July 29, 2023, didn’t help matters. Coming back from that one-sided beating would be difficult for any fighter, but it is far more problematic for what he went through in his car crash in Dallas.

“Lots of dates changed. There was no contract the whole time. The only time I saw him is when you guys saw him in the ring [last year on March 30, 2024, after Tim Tszyu clash at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas] when he came up to me after my fight,” said Sebastian Fundora to Fight Hub TV when asked why he never fought Errol Spence in the last year.

Fundora could have fought twice during the year that he was trying to get the fight made against Spence. Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Terence Crawford would have jumped at the chance to fight him.

Spence: MIA?

“He showed me his betting ticket. He won $40,000, and he was happy. He called me out, but nothing came of it,” Fundora continued about Spence. “It was literally that, saying, ‘I want to fight you.’ Of course, I said, ‘I want to fight you, too,’ but that’s it.

“There were dates, but they were constantly changing. I can’t speak on his behalf, but we were ready the whole time. We were told everything, but it’s not up to me to say those things. If you want to hear that, you’re probably going to have to talk to him. Who knows? I always invite it. I invite everybody in this division to fight me, but we’ll see,” said Fundora when asked if he ever thinks a fight between him and Errol happens.
