Chiefs-Vikings predicted to swing blockbuster draft day trade

Chiefs-Vikings predicted to swing blockbuster draft day trade

The Kansas City Chiefs hold the No.31 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. They could look to make a trade to help them land a better player. NFL.com’s Mike Band predicted the Chiefs would swing a trade with the Minnesota Vikings for the No.24 overall pick.

Band had the Chiefs selecting Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons after moving up seven spots. However, Simmons carries some injury concerns.

“Recovering from an October patella tendon tear, Simmons’ medical clearance will be paramount to his draft stock,” wrote Band. “When healthy, his combination of size, length and footwork match the prototype Veach and Reid typically look for in a franchise tackle. Even after signing Jaylon Moore (12 career starts) to a two-year, $30 million deal, the Chiefs remain intent on fortifying Patrick Mahomes’ protection long-term. Simmons did recently start following the Chiefs and Mahomes on Instagram, with Kansas City the only team among his list of 900-plus follows.”

Without diving too deep into his social media activity, it’s not hard to see Simmons as a fit in Kansas City. The Chiefs were dismantled by the Philadelphia Eagles pass rush in the Super Bowl. They have franchise-tagged Trey Smith but traded Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears. Simmons could fill a hole at offensive tackle. Thuney played the position near the end of the season, but even then it felt like a temporary fix to a longstanding problem.

Trading up would likely cost the Chiefs a day-two pick as well as the No.31 overall spot.
