Bengals free agent pitch sends 4-time Pro Bowl edge rusher to Cincinnati

Bengals free agent pitch sends 4-time Pro Bowl edge rusher to Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Bengals finished their 2024 season with a 9-8 record, in third place in the AFC North behind the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers and outside of the playoffs again.

While Joe Burrow and company were explosive on the offensive side of the ball, it was the defense that struggled mightily for Cincinnati with the unit finishing tied for 25th in scoring (25.5 points allowed per game) and 25th in yards (348.3 yards allowed per game).

The defensive problems led the team to move on from defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and hire former Notre Dame defensive coordinator (and former Bengals linebackers coach) Al Golden.

While that should be a positive change, Cincinnati also lost edge rusher Sam Hubbard after the stud defender announced his retirement earlier this offseason. Now, they’ll need to find someone to take his place.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Bill Barnell listed the Bengals as a top landing spot for edge rusher Matthew Judon, who could do just that.

Judon, 32, played collegiately at Grand Valley State from 2010-15 before the Ravens selected him with the 146th pick in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft.

Judon began his NFL career as a rotational piece but earned a starting job by his second season and made an impact immediately. He went on to play five seasons for Baltimore, making two Pro Bowls.

In 2021, he signed with the New England Patriots and made two more Pro Bowls in his three seasons with the team before they shipped him to the Atlanta Falcons for a third-round pick during training camp.

Judon appeared in all 17 games for Atlanta last season, playing 59% of the team’s defensive snaps and recording 41 tackles (seven for a loss), nine quarterback hits, 5.5 sacks, five passes defensed and an interception that was returned for a touchdown.

Pro Football Focus gave Judon a 43.0 overall grade for his performance in 2024, ranking him 194th of the 211 qualified NFL edge rushers last season. He also received a 53.9 pass-rush grade (161st) and a 53.6 run-defense grade (160th).

At this point in his career, Judon probably isn’t the Pro Bowl, double-digit sack pass rusher that he once was. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t help and benefit from rushing opposite Trey Hendrickson in 2025 and find some success.
