Colts million star shades Cowboys after fateful trade decision

The Indianapolis Colts added some star power to their secondary this offseason when they signed cornerback Charvarius Ward to a massive contract.

In need of a true No. 1 cornerback to handle the perimeter, Ward fits the bill of what the Colts were looking for entering the offseason. It’s been a long road for Ward, who has spent time with three different teams before signing with the Colts.

One of those teams was the Dallas Cowboys, who signed Ward as an undrafted rookie following the 2018 NFL Draft. Despite having what he thought was a sensational training camp, the Cowboys traded him to the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s not something Ward has forgotten despite his immense success in the NFL since then.

“I was strappin’ all them boys. I thought I was gonna make the team with Dallas, but Dallas don’t make a lot of good decisions, so they ended up trading me to Kansas City, which was the best thing to happen to me,” Ward said in an interview with Colts.com’s JJ Stankevitz.

The Central Florida product was traded to the Chiefs just before roster cuts in 2018, and it turned out to be a defining moment. The next season, Ward was a major asset for Kansas City, rising the depth chart to the No. 1 spot in the cornerback room. He wound up winning a Super Bowl in Kansas City before joining the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the 2022 season.

Ward certainly brings an element of confidence to the locker room, which is something the Colts have been missing in the secondary over the last few seasons. And Indy should be thankful for the decision the Cowboys made in 2018 because it led to Ward joining the Colts with the ability to make a major impact.
