Chiefs almost lost $1.5 million free agent to Bears thanks to Eric Bieniemy

The Kansas City Chiefs brought Kareem Hunt in last season to give the running game a boost after an injury to Isiah Pacheco. They signed him to a one-year deal this offseason but almost lost him to an NFC North team.

Hunt led the Chiefs in rushing after being brought in mid-season. He had 728 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. He signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal to return, but according to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Chicago Bears were interested in signing Hunt. Eric Bieniemy is the Bears running backs coach now and was with Hunt in Kansas City.

“Another option for Hunt before he signed back with (Chiefs) — the (Bears), whose running backs coach, Eric Bieniemy, spent two seasons with Hunt in Kansas City,” Fowler wrote on X. “Chicago ended up bringing back Travis Homer, as (Adam Schefter) reported.”

Hunt was originally drafted by the Chiefs in 2017. After Pacheco returned from injury last season, Hunt showed he can still be an asset for the team. The Bears eventually had to pivot, but he could have been a great asset for Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams. Unfortunately for the Bears, his connection with Bieniemy was not enough to pry him from the Chiefs.

Hunt has 7,230 career scrimmage yards and 64 touchdowns. He and the Chiefs will try and get back to their Super Bowl-winning ways after failing to complete the first three-peat in league history against the Philadelphia Eagles.
