Russell Wilson free agent pitch lands veteran QB on NFC team with budding superstar receiver

One of the biggest storylines of the 2025 NFL offseason is the future of free-agent quarterback Russell Wilson. The veteran is arguably the top signal-caller on the open market and has a couple of teams vying for his services.

Though a return to the Pittsburgh Steelers is still on the table, Stadium Rant’s Howe Fresh believes the New York Giants could be a potential landing spot for Wilson.

“While the Giants have a pending offer to quarterback Aaron Rodgers, it seems unlikely he will sign. Rodgers does not want to go to a worse team and is playing the waiting game. Wilson would be a steady veteran presence on the rebuilding team, but is that something he may be interested in? Is he OK with being the team’s second choice? Every man has a price,” Fresh wrote.

Wilson landing in New York has gained some steam after the 10-time Pro Bowler visited the team’s facility on Monday. The Giants are in desperate need of a quarterback and have also met with Jameis Winston and Joe Flacco. Obviously, the franchise is also in the running for Aaron Rodgers.

Though Wilson isn’t an exciting player and will turn 37 years old during the 2025 season, the former third-round pick had a solid season in 2024 and would be a nice stopgap quarterback for New York. Wilson started 11 games for Pittsburgh last year and tossed 16 touchdowns to just five interceptions with a 6-5 record.

The 2019 second-team All-Pro selection could flourish in a Giants’ offense that has two reliable receiving options in Malik Nabers and Darius Slayton, and an offensive-minded head coach, Brian Daboll, who has had success in the past. However, New York still needs to upgrade the offensive line and address a few positions of need on the defensive side of the ball.

Though the Giants were horrendous in 2024 and still don’t have a high-level roster, the team will be much improved in 2025 if they can finally find competent quarterback play. Russell Wilson had some rough moments last season, but the former Wisconsin Badger is still an adequate starting signal-caller who would help New York win games this year. Additionally, if the franchise decides to select a quarterback with a premium draft choice in April, Wilson would be a fantastic mentor for the rookie.
