As the New York Giants continue to wait on the decision from free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers, they’ve made sure to do their homework on the other available options under center.
That included hosting another high-profile quarterback for a visit last week as Russell Wilson met with the team’s brass on Friday. The Giants also met with veteran Joe Flacco last week and are scheduled to host Jameis Winston on Tuesday.
While Rodgers drags out his decision to incredible lengths, Wilson reportedly has viewed the Giants as “a viable option for a while now,” per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler (h/t Bleacher Report).
The Giants seem to be fixed on Rodgers as their top option, but they face competition from the Pittsburgh Steelers and potentially the Minnesota Vikings. New York has made a handful of moves in free agency, but they can’t truly get going until the quarterback position has its first addition.
At this point in their careers, the difference between Rodgers and Wilson isn’t all that much and neither is viewed as a long-term option under center.
Wilson most recently spent time with the Steelers, where he started 11 games following a calf injury that forced him to miss the first month and a half of the season. He started out well with Pittsburgh, but the 10-time Pro Bowler averaged just 218.1 passing yards per game while throwing 10 touchdown passes over his final eight games.
In all, he completed 63.7% of his passes for 2,482 yards (225.6 YPG), 16 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 95.6 passer rating. Spotrac is currently projecting Wilson to land a two-year deal worth $77.47 million in free agency.
The offseason will hit a lull until Rodgers makes his decision, but the Giants may not want to wait too long if they have the opportunity to address their biggest need before the draft.
