Cowboys might use surprisingly high draft pick on QB to be Dak Prescott’s backup

Cowboys might use surprisingly high draft pick on QB to be Dak Prescott’s backup

The Dallas Cowboys have their franchise quarterback in Dak Prescott.

But it might not be too soon for them to considering taking another one, maybe as early as the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

That’s what NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was thinking on Monday night on his show, The Insiders.

Rapoport’s premise began with Cooper Rush’s departure. Rush was a reliable backup to Prescott, but he just signed with the Ravens to play behind Lamar Jackson.

That, along with Trey Lance currently sitting in the free-agent pool, leaves a gap behind Prescott. The Cowboys only have Will Grier under contract besides Dak.

Prescott should still be the man for a few years, at least, but eventually, teams have to start thinking about the future. Rapoport suggests that time might be now, and he named one possibility.

“What if it’s somebody like Quinn Ewers (out of Texas) in the second round?” Rapoport said. “He’s someone who is really talented, they know well. He might not have to play for a couple years, but in three years could certainly be talented enough to be their starting quarterback.

Rapoport didn’t float any other names, but there are certainly other intriguing QBs on the board after the top names, guys like Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Ohio State’s Will Howard.

It wouldn’t create any controversy right off the bat if Dallas uses a day-two pick on a quarterback, but it could set them up for a longer runway in the future.
