Packers make egregious error as top edge rusher signs with NFC rival

Packers make egregious error as top edge rusher signs with NFC rival

The Green Bay Packers are clearly only a couple of pieces away from emerging as legitimate Super Bowl contenders, and they should have been able to plug those holes in free agency.

Instead, the Packers have largely sat on the sidelines and watched as the best players on the open market have signed elsewhere, even with Green Bay having substantial cap room.

But on Monday, the Packers may have made their most egregious error yet, allowing edge rusher Azeez Ojulari to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles on one-year, $4 million contract.

Green Bay definitely needs another pass rusher, and Ojulari would have been a perfect fit. So why did the Packers not jump in on the 24-year-old if that were the price?

Ojulari has definitely had difficulty staying healthy, as he has played in a combined 29 games over the last three seasons. However, when he is on the field, he produces, as evidenced by the fact that he posted 28 tackles and six sacks in 11 games with the New York Giants in 2024. Back in his rookie campaign in 2021, he finished with 49 tackles and eight sacks.

At the very least, Green Bay should have taken a one-year flier on the former second-round pick. How could it have hurt the Packers? Even if Ojulari ended up being a complete bust in the tundra, it would have cost them very, very little.

Perhaps Green Bay has its eyes on a couple of pass rushers in the NFL Draft, and that is perfectly fine. But it seems like the Packers missed a massive opportunity to add a young, talented player on a cheap deal here.

Not only that, but Green Bay watched as Ojulari walked to another NFC contender. Talk about adding insult to injury.
