The Los Angeles Chargers have brought in some help at the cornerback position in free agency, agreeing to terms with free-agent cornerback Benjamin St-Juste.
St-Juste was born in Montreal and played at both Michigan and Minnesota in college before being selected in the third round of the 2021 draft by the Washington Commanders. It seems like he will be some sort of a reclamation project for this team as his career has been fairly uneventful thus far.
He has made 45 starts in his career and has just one interception. He is a big corner at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, but if you take a stroll through X (formerly known as Twitter), most fans of the Commanders seem to be happy to see him leaving.
He will join a secondary that lost Kristian Fulton in free agency and likely won’t be re-signing Asante Samuel Jr. The team is a bit thin at the position despite adding Donte Jackson already. Aside from Jackson, the only other cornerbacks on the roster are Cam Hart, Tarheeb Still, Deane Leonard and Ja’Sir Taylor. Derwin James played slot corner last year and will likely stay in that role.
St-Juste won’t be guaranteed a roster spot. He will have to earn his keep on Jim Harbaugh’s team as he does seem to have a problem with penalties. Last season, he was called for pass interference six times. Only three players in the league were called for more.
One thing the team could experiment with would be to move St-Juste into a safety role the way they did with Elijah Molden last season. Molden had played safety with the Tennessee Titans, but he began his career at cornerback.
St-Juste will be looking to get his career going back in the right direction and won’t be able to skate by on the fact that he was a high draft pick. He’ll either have the talent to make the roster as a back-end defender or he’ll be looking for work by the end of the summer.
