The Yankees fell to the St. Louis Cardinals by a final score of 6-5 on Sunday afternoon in Jupiter, Fla.
Here are the key takeaways….
-Carlos Carrasco, who all of a sudden could be a much more important part of the Yankees’ pitching depth given Gerrit Cole’s situation, had a solid outing. He allowed a solo homer to Alec Burleson in the top of the second, but that was the only damage he’d allow. In 3.0 innings, Carrasco allowed one earned run on two hits, striking out three with one walk. The veteran lowered his spring ERA to 2.35.
-It’s been rough going for Jazz Chisholm Jr. during spring training, but he singled in the first inning before absolutely demolishing a two-run homer in the third to put the Yanks up 2-1. Chisholm’s first homer of the spring cleared everything in right field, leaving the stadium in a hurry.
–J.C. Escarra continues to make a strong push for the backup catcher job behind Austin Wells. Following Chisholm’s homer, Escarra slugged one of his own, demolishing a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right-center.
Escarra is now hitting .375 this spring.
–Anthony Volpe joined in on the power display party in the top of the fifth, bashing a solo shot of his own. Volpe had a nice day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, one RBI, and two runs scored.
-Outfield prospect Spencer Jones is known for his bat, particularly his light-tower power, but he made a tremendous catch in the bottom of the eighth, going back to the wall to rob Leonardo Bernal of extra bases, and potentially a home run.
Who was the game MVP?
Chisholm and Volpe get co-MVP honors as they both homered and collected a pair of hits.
