Stanton was originally away from the team for a little over a week due to a “personal matter” and it was later revealed that he underwent two rounds of injections to help with the injury which has kept him sidelined to this point in camp.
The 35-year-old was bothered by the issue last season, and he hasn’t been able to swing a bat since mid-January.
Stanton is expected to begin the year on the injured list, and Aaron Boone told reporters on Friday afternoon that he “doubts” he will be able to get into any of the remaining spring training games before the regular season begins.
GM Brian Cashman also didn’t rule out the possibility of him having to undergo surgery while speaking to reporters down in Tampa on Thursday, but he did call it a “last resort.”
Stanton hit 27 homers in 114 games last season, and was a force down the stretch in the playoffs.
