After a 1-3 start to the 2024 NFL season, the Tennessee Titans are on the fast track to becoming sellers at the trade deadline, which is less than a month away on Nov. 5.
With that in mind, CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin sees the Titans trading away one of their starters along the defensive line, Sebastian Joseph-Day, to the San Francisco 49ers.
“The Titans probably don’t want to break up their stingy defense, but can they afford to let trade chips sit around? Down Javon Hargrave, the 49ers might be willing to reunite with their 2023 reserve,” Benjamin wrote.
The Titans signed Joseph-Day to a one-year deal during the offseason, and with him set to hit free agency next offseason, it’s conceivable he could be available at the deadline if the Titans don’t turn things around.
The 29-year-old is actually having a strong season over four games, posting two sacks and 12 combined tackles, including three for loss.
Of course, the 49ers are already quite familiar with Joseph-Day, who played in five games (including playoffs) with the Niners last season. San Fran also has a need upfront after the season-ending injury to defensive lineman Javon Hargrave.
“It’s a big [loss],” head coach Kyle Shanahan said of losing Hargrave for the rest of the 2024 season. “I thought he had his best game yesterday. I thought he was a huge factor, really affected the quarterback in that game. … He’s one of our better players. He was definitely going in the right direction and was going to have a big year.”
With the Niners’ need along the defensive line, and with the Titans likely to be motivated to sell at the trade deadline, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see Titans general manager Ran Carthon and his old team hook up for a deal.
