Every year, the NFL reveals its award winners at the annual NFL Honors ceremony. Along with the individual player awards, we will also learn the 2025 NFL Hall of Fame class.
We had predicted that there was going to be controversy around the MVP Award and there was. Bills quarterback Josh Allen won the award, with Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson in second. In the voting system, Allen tallied 383 total points to Jackson’s 362, making it one of the closest MVP races in history.
Eagles running back Saquon Barkley won the AP’s Offensive Player of the Year Award, but he didn’t come close to Allen or Jackson in MVP voting.
Allen’s MVP was surprising to some, as he was named the Second-Team All-Pro QB behind Jackson on the First-Team. It was the first time since 1987 that the First-Team All-Pro QB lost MVP to another quarterback.
Lamar Jackson was named 1st Team All-Pro QB in 2024. In each of the previous 11 seasons, that QB went on to win the MVP. https://t.co/d6Lcy0r0jl
— Ed Werder (@WerderEdNFL) February 7, 2025
Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels took home Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, as well as the Play of the Year for his Hail Mary to beat Chicago. Defensive Rookie of the Year went to Rams rookie Jared Verse, and Patrick Surtain II became the first cornerback since Stephon Gilmore in 2019 to win the AP Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Every other award was pretty straightforward. The voting for Coach of the Year was interesting. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn came in fourth place, but many thought he should have been higher given how Washington finished the 2023 season and the quick turnaround he pulled off in his first year as the head coach. Kevin O’Connell won the AP Coach of the Year Award and indicated in his press conference after that he wants Sam Darnold back as his quarterback.
Kevin O’Connell in his Coach of the Year news conference: Our goal is to win a championship and Sam Darnold is going to be a huge part of it when we do it.
Sure sounds like Vikings want to ride with Darnold next year.
