The New York Jets acquired wide receiver Davante Adams before the trade deadline last season but he did nothing to change the team’s fortunes, which wasn’t surprising considering the Jets’ issues were much deeper than just one position.
Adams has two more years remaining on his current contract but doesn’t have any guaranteed money left, which makes him easy to cut or trade if the Jets wish. His future will likely be tied with Aaron Rodgers’.
If the Jets move on from Adams in any form or fashion this year, New York’s wide receivers room is going to be very bare. To alleviate that issue, Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine proposes a trade that lands the Jets Los Angeles Rams wideout, Cooper Kupp.
In the trade proposal, New York sends Los Angeles a 2025 third-round pick. Here’s what Ballentine said about the suggested trade.
“If the Jets part with Rodgers and Adams then the receiving corps is going to be a major problem,” Ballentine wrote. “Garrett Wilson is capable of being a true No. 1 receiver, but he has to have some help. Regardless of who the Jets were to land on at quarterback, their life would be easier if the Jets traded for Cooper Kupp. The veteran receiver could do a lot of the same things that Amon-Ra St. Brown did in the Lions offense and draw attention away from Wilson.”
Kupp took to social media on Monday to reveal that the Rams plan on trading him this offseason, which is why he’s being thrown around as a trade target.
“I was informed that the team will be seeking a trade immediately and will be working with me and my family to find the right place to continue competing for championships,” Kupp’s statement said. “I don’t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA.
“Still, if there’s one thing that I have learned over the years: there are so many things that are out of your control, but it is how you respond to these things that you will look back on and remember.”
While there’s no question that a healthy Kupp would be an upgrade for the Jets, he also comes with concerns. Not only is he about to turn 32 this year, but Kupp has had no shortage of injury issues, with the former Super Bowl MVP missing 18 games combined the past three seasons.
Adding to that, any team that trades for him will have to absorb $20 million, and then $19.85 million in 2026, barring the Rams picking up some money or a restructure after a deal gets done, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
When you factor all of that in, it’s hard to fathom the Rams getting a third-round pick straight up for Kupp. Two wide receivers of similar age but with less injury concerns, Adams and DeAndre Hopkins, fetched a conditional third and a fifth-rounder, respectively.
The only way the Rams get a third-rounder back is if they pick up some salary and/or send a pick back in return.
As far as the Jets are concerned, they should not be in the market for an aging, injury-prone and expensive receiver who is also going to cost draft capital.
Not to mention, the Rams are going to allow Kupp to have a say where he goes and chances are the former All-Pro will want to join a contender, something the Jets are not.
