During the 2024 NFL draft, the New England Patriots turned down multiple trades for their third-overall selection and took North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye.
After sitting the first five games of his rookie season, Maye took over as the starter for the team’s Week 6 matchup against the Houston Texans and has started every game since.
While the Patriots have only won two games that he’s started (and one of those he was knocked out of due to a hit to the head), it’s evident that Maye is running the offense much better than Jacoby Brissett had been. He’s shown some real talent that has many believing that he’s already the face of the franchise, which usually comes with the position.
On this week’s episode of “Patriots All-Access,” the rookie was asked about the pressure that comes with the face-of-the-franchise title, and his answer was perfect.
“I wouldn’t call it pressure, I think it’s a privilege,” Maye said.”You work your whole life to get to this moment… once this moment comes I don’t think you should lose sight of the fact that this is what you dreamed about… I think having that pressure you turn it into a privilege and hopefully get this thing rolling.”
Maye is the leader of this team already, and answers like that show that he has the attitude to control the situation and run an offense in the NFL at such a young age.
The team should get much better as he continues to learn and get more weapons around him. Even though their 2024 record is horrible, Maye’s lifting up the talent around him already, and that’s what a face of the franchise does.
