For the ninth straight season, the Kansas City Chiefs are the AFC West champions.
With yet another one-score victory in Week 14’s edition of “Sunday Night Football,” the Chiefs wrapped up their division with four games left to play. Kansas City used a walk-off field goal, which first hit off the left upright, from Matthew Wright to claim a 19-17 win over the Chargers.
Neither offense was firing on all cylinders on Sunday night, resulting in a defensive battle throughout the first half. It wasn’t until the final minute of the second quarter that Patrick Mahomes (210 passing yards, one touchdown, no interceptions) got Kansas City in the end zone, finding DeAndre Hopkins for a nine-yard score.
MORE CHIEFS:
The Chargers’ offense, without rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey for the night, struggled to put points on the board in the first half, trailing 13-0 at the break. However, Justin Herbert (213 passing yards, one touchdown, no interceptions) led his team on consecutive touchdown drives in the third quarter, and Los Angeles went into the final 15 minutes looking to complete a comeback.
Instead, Andy Reid’s squad did what it does best: find ways to win. Using a 14-play drive in the final minutes to reach field-goal range, the Chiefs put Wright in a strong position, and his 31-yard field goal concluded the AFC West race in 2024, also putting the Chargers away.
Kansas City, now 12-1, remains in a strong spot to claim the AFC’s No. 1 seed down the stretch of the regular season. Los Angeles fell to 8-5 but can claim one of the AFC’s wild-card spots with a few more wins over its final four games.

8:46 p.m. — Make it three consecutive punts for these two squads. Two incompletions from Mahomes kept the Chiefs short of a first down, and after an excellent special teams play, they give the ball back to Los Angeles at the Chargers’ two-yard line.

8:35 p.m. — Kansas City’s defense gets to Herbert early. On 2nd & 12, he’s taken down by Tershawn Wharton for a loss of four, but Herbert answers by connecting with Quentin Johnston for a long first down.
