Dillian Whyte’s explanation for his first-round defeat to Moses Itauma arrives as he pursues a comeback fight against Johnny Fisher. He says a broken foot hampered him, but the timing raises a question: why reveal it now?
The injury could partly explain Whyte’s lack of mobility against Itauma. It also gives him a way to challenge the retirement calls that followed the defeat, just as another British heavyweight offers him a route back.
Whyte said he fractured his foot during training, then injured it again while warming up in the dressing room before facing Itauma.
“We had to call the doctor who was with me to examine it,” Whyte told Sky Sports. “He advised me not to fight, and I said ‘no’. There’s no way I’m going to come all the way to Saudi and not fight last minute.”
“Sky Sports’ report includes no medical documentation or comment from the doctor Whyte says examined him. That leaves the broken-foot explanation supported by his account alone.”
That account raises another question about his decision to proceed. Whyte believed he could take Itauma into the later rounds despite the injury, but he accepted a serious disadvantage against a fast, aggressive opponent. The gamble ended before he could test that plan.
Whyte says he initially remained quiet because he did not want to take credit away from Itauma. That explains his reluctance immediately afterward. It leaves the longer silence, and his decision to end it during comeback discussions, open to scrutiny.
Fisher provides an opportunity to establish whether Whyte still has enough left to compete. Whyte watched his recent majority-decision win over Michael Pirotton from ringside, and manager Michael Ofo says the teams agreed to the matchup in principle. November or December is being discussed, with no confirmed date.
The disclosure benefits Whyte’s comeback case. That does not make it false, but a possible explanation for the Itauma defeat only goes so far. Beating Fisher would give Whyte stronger evidence that people dismissed him too quickly.
