Chris Eubank Jr says he’ll stop dieting and step in if Tyson Fury’s December 11 fight with Anthony Joshua falls through. He’s joking, but he picked his moment well. The heavyweights have a signed fight in Cardiff, yet arguments over Dana White’s role and drug testing are already competing with the fight itself for attention.
“If Fury vs AJ falls through… I’ll stop dieting, put the extra lbs back on & step up to the plate. Let me know boys,” said Eubank Jr. on X.
Eubank tagged both men and showed a scale reading of 206 pounds. He’s carrying a paunch, too. It’s a funny reveal from a fighter whose recent bouts were at middleweight, and he surely knows that putting on weight does not prepare him for Fury or Joshua.
Junior also knows how to get his name beside a huge payday without agreeing to a fight. One post has put him into the Fury–Joshua conversation, even though there is no sign that either camp wants him as an opponent. It costs him nothing, gets people talking, and lets him take a shot at a promotion that is giving him plenty of material.
The joke works because fans have waited years for Fury and Joshua to meet. A contract and a date should have settled the question of whether they will fight. Instead, the public is hearing about disagreements before the first press conference. Those disputes do not mean either man plans to pull out, but they give Eubank’s line an audience.
If the Cardiff main event collapses, finding another fight that can fill the same stadium and carry the same broadcast would be difficult. Eubank against either heavyweight would attract curiosity, but it would be a size mismatch sold on celebrity. His post gets a laugh because everyone can see the absurdity—and because, in boxing, a signed Fury–Joshua fight still has people discussing substitutes.
