Gary Antuanne Russell wants a fight with Shakur Stevenson to grow, but Tim Bradley says the WBA champion is gambling with an opportunity already in front of him. According to Bradley, Russell has been offered $2 million to face Shakur in a 140-pound unification. Russell’s talk of making the fight later left Bradley asking what more he expects to gain by waiting.
Dan Rafael reported that Zuffa Boxing contacted PBC with an offer for Russell, and Shakur then called him out publicly. The reported offer did not disclose a purse, so the $2 million figure remains Bradley’s claim. Russell has indicated he would rather make the fight down the line.
“When $500,000 is your biggest paycheck, okay? And you got an opportunity to make $2 million to fight one of the best fighters on planet Earth, right? You can dethrone him. And this is for the 140 lb crown. And you turn it down. You talking about duck,” said Bradley on his channel about Antuanne Russell.
Bradley’s frustration is understandable, even if the full terms of the offer are unknown. A fight does not become more valuable simply because two champions wait. Russell needs either a bigger audience or a stronger negotiating position to make the delay pay off. Holding the WBA belt gives him leverage today; another defense does not guarantee more of it.
His fight with Andy Hiraoka is a reminder of the risk. Russell retained his title, but it was a difficult night rather than the sort of performance that made a Shakur fight feel too small to stage now. Every bout he takes while waiting creates another chance to lose the belt or emerge with less momentum.
Shakur has reasons of his own to want the fight immediately. Adding Russell’s WBA title would strengthen his position at 140 pounds while he considers more lucrative names and a possible move to welterweight. He is unlikely to reserve his schedule indefinitely for Russell. That gives Russell a reason to examine the offer seriously, though it does not oblige him to accept terms he considers inadequate.
Bradley recently challenged Shakur over the prospect of fighting Manny Pacquiao. Now that Shakur is calling for an active champion in his division, Bradley is asking Russell to meet that challenge.
Russell can argue for better money or a better date. But if his plan is simply to let the matchup “marinate,” he needs to explain what will make it bigger. Right now, he has a belt, a reported offer, and a chance to beat Shakur. None is guaranteed to be there later.
