Heather Hardy is seeking more than $10 million from Jake Paul, Most Valuable Promotions, Bryce Holden, and Holden Boxing over her August 2023 rematch with Amanda Serrano. The former featherweight champion alleges that the fight caused a permanent brain injury and ended her career. Those claims have yet to be tested in court.
As reported by Uncrowned on Yahoo Sports, Hardy’s complaint states:
“Defendants knew, or should have known, that the bout presented an extraordinary and foreseeable risk of serious neurological harm to Hardy.”
The central question is who bore responsibility for putting Hardy in the ring. Holden Boxing was the event’s licensed promoter, but Hardy’s complaint alleges that MVP helped arrange and benefit from the bout while Holden Boxing carried the formal regulatory role. Hardy also claims that people close to her, including longtime promoter Lou DiBella, opposed the rematch on safety grounds.
Serrano had beaten Hardy decisively in their first fight in 2019. In the rematch, CompuBox credited Serrano with landing 242 power punches across ten two-minute rounds. Hardy has not fought since. She says vision problems surfaced while she was preparing for a bare-knuckle bout in early 2024, and her complaint attributes her later neurological symptoms to the Serrano fight. The punch count shows how punishing the rematch was; by itself, it cannot establish when or how a particular injury occurred.
That distinction is important. Boxing permits dangerous fights, and a lopsided result does not alone prove negligence. Hardy’s case turns on what the defendants knew about her condition before the opening bell, what roles they actually played in arranging the bout, and whether the evidence connects the rematch to the disability she describes. The complaint makes serious allegations about each point. The defendants’ answers and the underlying evidence will determine whether they hold up.
