Shakur Stevenson says a fight announcement is coming. Nearly eight months after he beat Teofimo Lopez, the opponent matters more than the tease.
“Even my haters begging for a fight announcement 😂 I love yall it’s coming lol,” Shakur posted on X.
The Lopez win gave Shakur the strongest moment of his career. He controlled a major fight at Madison Square Garden and had the crowd’s attention afterward, when he brought Conor Benn into the ring and called him “food.” That confrontation made a Benn fight look like an immediate possibility. It went nowhere.
Shakur then spent months discussing a fight with WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney at 144 pounds. Haney’s side said it accepted the proposed weight, but no fight followed. Shakur holds a WBO title at 140, yet he sought a welterweight champion three pounds below that division’s limit while his own challengers waited. Fans are entitled to ask which division he actually intends to fight in.
Zuffa Boxing signed Shakur during the layoff. Dana White paid for a fighter whose win over Lopez had made him more valuable, but Zuffa has yet to put him in one of its rings. Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela, another Zuffa fighter, called for the fight. Shakur rejected it. If his eventual return is against someone less threatening and less appealing to fans, Zuffa will have spent months waiting for a bout that does little for its cards.
Eight months away does not erase what Shakur did to Lopez. It does make that performance harder to build on. The clips people see now are his posts about future fights, while the most impressive work of his career gets older.
The WBO has already indicated that a mandatory defense is due. It should follow through with a formal order and a clear timetable if Shakur’s next fight does not satisfy that obligation. A champion’s search for a bigger payday cannot leave the rest of the 140-pound division waiting indefinitely.
Shakur has earned the right to seek a major fight. He still has to make one. His announcement needs a date, a credible opponent, and an answer about the belt he holds.

Jose Valenzuela stepped up to hand Zuffa a ready-made fight featuring a dangerous, aggressive puncher against their prized technician. Shakur turned him down. Turning down internal company fights while angling for safety catches against Devin Haney at 144 pounds shows an athlete trying to run matchmaking from his couch.
White and the executive room would be entirely justified in pulling the plug, swallowing their pride, and sending Shakur right back out to free agency to waste somebody else’s time and money.
