The Los Angeles Dodgers placed pitcher Tarik Skubal on the bereavement list on Sunday, which means he could miss his final regular-season turn in the rotation next week.
Skubal’s next start is scheduled for Friday against the San Francisco Giants, which could fall within the three to seven days that players are allowed to be away from the team while on the bereavement list. But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts appeared to believe that Skubal will be back by Friday, telling reporters he would miss “a couple days.”
“Some personal stuff going on, but he’s fine,” Roberts said, via MLB.com’s Sonja Chen.
Skubal pitched in Saturday’s 10-4 win over the Giants, allowing 4 runs and 8 hits over 5 innings. He walked 2 batters with 3 strikeouts, tying his lowest total of the season. Saturday’s game was the first time Skubal gave up more than 3 runs in his nine starts with the Dodgers. according to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.
“Obviously, I wasn’t very good today, but the offense and defense and bullpen picked me up big time, and that’s what good teams do,” Skubal said after the game.
In his nine starts with the Dodgers since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers before the MLB trade deadline, Skubal has a 2.95 ERA and 4-2 record with 60 strikeouts in 55 innings.
The Dodgers took a 2-0 lead on a first-inning RBI double by Max Muncy and Mookie Betts hitting a run-scoring single in the second. But San Francisco tied the score in the third on a 2-run homer from Victor Bericoto, hitting a fastball left in the very middle of the strike zone by Skubal.
The two teams then traded runs during the third through fifth innings, resulting in a 4-4 tie, before the Dodgers pulled away on a 2-run hit by Tommy Edman and RBI single from Miguel Rojas. In the following inning, the Dodgers added 3 more runs with Will Smith driving in a run and Josue De Paula hitting a 2-run single.
To fill Skubal’s spot on the active roster, Emmet Sheehan was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. He pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings with 1 hit allowed and 9 strikeouts, taking over for opener Jack Dreyer in the Dodgers’ 3-1 win. In his previous two starts before being optioned, Sheehan allowed 1 run over 11 2/3 innings with 15 strikeouts.
