“I have to beat Teofimo first, though,” Garcia remarked when questioned about being the Face of Boxing. Lopez rose from his seat and barked, “That’s too damn bad, my dude.”

Spotting the WBA welterweight titleholder, Garcia answered, “What’s up, baby? Let’s go.”

Teofimo clearly acted with intent rather than impulse. Crashing the event allowed him to latch onto the division’s headline attraction, guaranteeing his presence in every post-fight headline. Yet significant regulatory hurdles stand in his path.

Jack Catterall earned mandatory status by defeating Shakhram Giyasov on May 23 in a WBA final eliminator. The sanctioning body originally instructed former titlist Rolando Romero to face Catterall within 180 days, setting an initial target date around November 19. Lopez subsequently took Romero’s belt via majority decision on August 22, yet the WBA has stayed quiet on whether that obligation transferred to the new champion.

A Ryan victory provides Teofimo a convenient loophole. Major sanctioning organizations consistently grant unification bouts preference over mandatory obligations. Lopez could formally ask the WBA to sanction an undisputed clash with the new WBC titlist, leaving Catterall with either an idle wait or step-aside compensation.

Sanctioning approval does not resolve the revenue split. Ryan controls the box office metrics, giving him massive leverage at the bargaining table. Teofimo carries a world title, yet January’s wide loss to Shakur Stevenson eroded his market power. Securing the assignment would likely require conceding full commercial control to Garcia.

That reality explains the press conference antics. Defending against Catterall fulfills a bureaucratic requirement, but it offers little prestige. A triumph over Ryan, by contrast, instantly restores Lopez to the elite commercial tier.

A Benn victory complicates everything. Benn plans to abandon the 147-pound limit soon, eyeing a campaign as high as 168 pounds. Winning the WBC belt only to surrender it leaves Teofimo stranded without a unification option.

Stealing a moment on the microphone required little effort. To make the superfight happen, Teofimo needs Ryan to deliver on Saturday, the WBA to wave through an exception, and the humility to accept Garcia’s financial terms.
