“OFFICIAL 🚨 WBO orders negotiations for Denzel Bentley vs. Yoenli Hernandez in the middleweight division. Both teams have 20 days to reach an agreement,” the WBO announced.
Bentley and McKenna had agreed to an IBF and WBO unification targeted for late 2026, but the fight still needed approval from both organizations. The WBO’s decision to enforce Hernandez’s mandatory removes the most important piece of that plan.
McKenna captured the vacant IBF title by defeating Etinosa Oliha in Dublin last month. Bentley became the full WBO champion in July after Janibek Alimkhanuly relinquished the belt before going up to super middleweight.
That created an opportunity to bring two titles together, and the Bentley–McKenna matchup made sense for both champions. Neither man is tied to one of the division’s established stars, while a unification would have given the winner a stronger negotiating position against WBC champion Carlos Adames or WBA champion Erislandy Lara.
Hernandez was never likely to step aside quietly. The Cuban contender earned his position and had already petitioned the WBO to enforce his title opportunity. Once the organization recognized him as Bentley’s mandatory, approving McKenna as a voluntary opponent became much harder to justify.
The WBO order does not permanently kill Bentley–McKenna. Bentley can face Hernandez first and return to the unification if he keeps his title. Hernandez would inherit that opportunity if he wins.
Bentley’s team can also request an exception allowing him to fight McKenna first, but the organization’s decision to order negotiations suggests it wants the mandatory completed without another delay. A unification agreement between the champions does not automatically override Hernandez’s rights.
The worst outcome for Bentley would be surrendering the WBO belt to preserve the McKenna fight. That would turn a two belt unification into a defense of McKenna’s IBF title and remove much of the contest’s value.
Postponement is more likely. Bentley can deal with Hernandez and revisit McKenna afterward, provided both champions still have their belts and their promoters remain interested.
For McKenna, the order forces him to find another opponent or remain inactive while Bentley fulfills his obligation. His own IBF mandatory situation may create another obstacle if the delay lasts too long.
The Bentley–McKenna agreement arrived before either organization had sanctioned the fight. The WBO has now made its position clear: Hernandez has the first claim on Bentley, and the unification must wait unless an exception is granted.
