By 1994, both were world champions.
Rafael captured the IBF lightweight title from Freddie Pendleton in February, climbing off the canvas twice in the opening round before winning a unanimous decision. Gabe earned the WBC super featherweight championship seven months later by defeating Jesse James Leija over 12 rounds.
The MGM Grand card gave the Ruelas brothers an opportunity no previous championship siblings had received. Each would defend his belt before watching the other do the same.
Gabe fought first against Fred Liberatore. He hurt the challenger with the opening punch, dropped him later in the first round, and continued breaking him down in the second. Liberatore suffered cuts over both eyes, prompting the ringside doctor and referee Mitch Halpern to stop the contest before the third round.
Gabe then showered, changed clothes, and returned to ringside to watch Rafael face British challenger Billy Schwer.
That defense required more work. Schwer remained aggressive and competitive, but Rafael’s combinations repeatedly tore open the challenger’s vulnerable eyebrows. Doctors inspected the damage between rounds before Schwer’s corner agreed to end the fight after the eighth. Rafael had retained his IBF lightweight crown, completing the brothers’ historic double.
Their contrasting performances also captured what separated them as fighters. Gabe overwhelmed Liberatore immediately with pressure and physical strength. Rafael took longer to solve Schwer, using sharper counters and sustained combinations to produce the cuts that ended the fight.
The achievement lasted only a few months as a shared championship reign. Rafael lost his title to Oscar De La Hoya in May 1995. Gabe retained his belt against Jimmy Garcia on the same card but surrendered it to Azumah Nelson that December.
Even with that short window, the Ruelas brothers did something unique. Two boys who once worked barefoot on a Mexican ranch became champions together, defended their titles together, and left the MGM Grand on the same night with both belts still in the family.
