Mauricio Lara Survives Knockdown, Stops Carlos Ornelas

Mauricio Lara had to climb off the canvas before collecting his fifth straight victory, stopping Carlos Ornelas in the second round on Saturday night in Guadalajara, Mexico. The former WBA featherweight champion got the quick finish, but Ornelas made him pay before going down himself.

The 28-year-old won the scheduled 10-round super featherweight main event on the Matchroom/DAZN card after a first round in which both men hit the floor.

Ornelas struck first, dropping Lara early. That gave the favorite an immediate test of his recovery and briefly put the underdog in position to wreck Lara’s winning streak.

Instead, Lara (31-3-2, 24 KOs) recovered and put Ornelas (29-6, 16 KOs) down late in the round. The bell gave Ornelas a break, but he had lost the advantage he earned only moments earlier. Dropping Lara had not taken the danger out of the exchanges.

There was little attempt to slow things down when the second began. Both resumed throwing, and Lara hurt Ornelas before pressing for the stoppage. A bad cut above Ornelas’ eye accompanied the punishment, and the referee halted the contest shortly into the round.

That trip to the canvas keeps this from being a routine demolition. Lara was vulnerable enough to give Ornelas a chance, but his ability to recover and return damaging punches decided the fight. Ornelas could put him down; keeping him under control afterward was another task entirely.

A championship at 130 pounds remains Lara’s goal, as Matchroom outlined before the fight. This result keeps that pursuit moving, although the opening round gives better opponents something to study.

Five consecutive victories give Lara a stronger case for better opposition. Saturday also showed the risk he carries into that next step: his power can rescue him from trouble, but he is still giving opponents opportunities to land first.
