Chantelle Cameron Outworks Mikaela Mayer for Three Belts

Chantelle Cameron’s pressure and body punching carried her to a unanimous decision over Mikaela Mayer on Saturday night, earning her the unified WBA, WBC and WBO super welterweight titles at bp pulse LIVE in Birmingham, England.

The judges scored the 10-round main event 97-93, 97-93 and 96-94 for Cameron. Mayer established her jab early, using her reach to keep Cameron at the end of her punches, but she was unable to maintain that distance as the fight progressed.

Cameron kept advancing, finding right hands at close range before increasing her body attack from the fifth round. That gave Mayer more to defend than the punches coming upstairs. Once Cameron got close, Mayer needed a way to interrupt her work and create room again. Trading there gave Cameron the kind of fight she wanted.

By the eighth, Mayer was bleeding from the nose. Cameron suffered a cut near her left eye in the ninth, but neither backed off. Both continued exchanging through the closing seconds of the tenth, with Cameron’s sustained inside work earning her the decision.

The fighters confirmed afterward that a rematch is planned, and Mayer has an adjustment to make beyond starting well behind her jab.

Lateral movement after punching and tying Cameron up before she can unload inside are possible answers. Mayer needs to make her opponent earn each approach, rather than allowing one successful entry to become a prolonged exchange.

Cameron wants their second meeting contested over three-minute rounds. Longer rounds would give her more time to sustain those attacks before the bell, but the benefit is not automatic. She would have to maintain that output, while Mayer would have more time to establish her jab and make Cameron miss.

Their first meeting rewarded Cameron’s ability to keep working at close quarters. Unless Mayer can shorten those exchanges, another fast start may leave her facing the same difficult second half.
