The original matchmaking was risky from the beginning. The Cuban southpaw is 40, and Queensberry was relying on an aging fighter to complete camp and reach fight night. His withdrawal has left Junior with a substitute who will have only a few days to prepare.

Perez still would have given Junior a specific technical test. His southpaw stance, experience and counterpunching would have forced the 23-year-old to manage distance, adjust to different angles and avoid becoming reckless when attacking.

Musah presents a completely different style after Junior spent camp preparing for Perez. That may require a quick tactical adjustment, but it turns the bout into an exercise in patience rather than the carefully chosen test Queensberry originally planned.

At 35, Musah has a modest 4-2-1 record, although he is not as weak as those numbers suggest. He stopped 14-2 Nathan Quarless in March after dropping him in the fifth and sixth rounds. Neither of his two defeats came inside the distance, and he has completed two ten-round fights.

Reducing the contest from ten rounds to six limits what Junior can learn from it. He must build stamina, manage his pace and think clearly when tired. Even if Musah lasts, six rounds will not replicate the physical and mental strain found against leading cruiserweights. The replacement also puts Junior in a no-win situation. An early knockout will be dismissed as the predictable result against a fight-week substitute. If Musah takes him six rounds or makes him look sluggish, questions will be asked about his readiness for better opposition.

The promotional purpose is obvious. Junior has not fought since defeating Ellis Zorro by unanimous decision in July 2025. Keeping him active, placing him before a large crowd and giving viewers another look at his power all benefit Queensberry.

Activity and development are not the same. Viddal Riley, Cheavon Clarke and Isaac Chamberlain have already competed in meaningful domestic fights. Junior requires that level of opposition if Queensberry wants to move him toward British, European and world honors.

Appearing against Musah may fill a space on the prelims, but sitting out and returning in a properly prepared ten-round contest would do more for Junior’s career.
