Rolando “Rolly” Romero believes the judges denied him a deserved win over Teofimo Lopez, demanding an immediate return bout after losing his WBA welterweight title by majority decision on Saturday night.
According to Romero, Lopez landed only two clean punches throughout the contest, whereas his own shots caused visible damage, hurting the new champion several times. The draw on one scorecard strengthened his belief that the fight was close enough to warrant another meeting.
“It’s like I never get a fair shake. It’s apparent. I clearly outboxed the dude that’s supposed to be one of the best boxers. He’s an Olympian and all this stuff. I clearly outboxed him. I cut him. I hurt him multiple times. It’s clear as day. I deserve a rematch,” said Romero at the post-fight press conference.
Regarding the verdict, Romero placed no personal blame on Lopez. He referred to Teofimo as his “little brother,” noting that their embrace before the 12th round reflected genuine friendship. He directed his frustration entirely at the officials, calling the scoring “political.”
The former champion stated one of the punches that stunned Lopez should have produced a knockdown. He also claimed Teofimo was badly shaken by another shot near the end of a round, surviving only because the bell saved him before Romero could finish the job.
Without a contractual clause in place, Romero remains dependent on Teofimo and the promoters agreeing to negotiate again. He maintains that the tight margin on the official cards justifies another look.
“Of course, I am owed a rematch. You don’t get a 114-114, 115-113 and not get a rematch.”
Rolly’s case is weakened by his own admission that he could have applied more pressure. While he landed the more damaging punches, prolonged inactivity allowed Teofimo to collect close rounds without taking major risks. That passivity may have cost Romero his belt. Feeling aggrieved will not guarantee him another opportunity, especially with other contenders pursuing Lopez, but the narrow scoring leaves him with a legitimate claim.
