Matchroom Must Prove It Can Deliver For Andy Cruz

Matchroom CEO Frank Smith discussed the negotiations from a position of authority, treating his company as the party deciding if Cruz fits its plans. The promotional results so far give Cruz reason to conduct his own review.

“His contract has come to an end. We’re looking at it right now. We shall see. It’s about aligning on a path and a vision of what makes sense,” Smith told Pro Boxing Fans.

Cruz has participated in only one semi-important professional fight, against Raymond Muratalla. Matchroom did not open a door for him to receive an unearned title shot. He worked his way into a mandatory position and earned the fight through the rankings.

The larger names never arrived. Cruz did not land fights with Shakur Stevenson, Gervonta Davis, Teofimo Lopez or Keyshawn Davis during his time with Matchroom. Re-signing makes sense only if the promoter can show how the next contract will deliver something better.

His interest in moving to junior lightweight adds another question. Dropping to 130 pounds risks sacrificing the No. 3 position the IBF recently restored to him at lightweight. Even as a one-fight experiment, the move offers no guarantee of gaining the major opportunities unavailable at 135.

There is also a physical concern. Cruz rehydrated to 149.2 pounds for his last appearance. Cutting another five pounds asks more of his body while placing a valuable lightweight ranking in danger.

Smith says both sides must align on a career plan, but Cruz has greater leverage than that wording suggests. He is free to hear competing offers, and Matchroom must demonstrate that it can finally secure the opponents he wants.

The decision comes down to results. If another promoter presents a stronger route to major fights, Cruz gains little by returning to an arrangement that has yet to provide them.
