Two-time Olympic gold medalist Shields, 19-0 (4 KOs), of Flint, Michigan, stopped Australian Olympian Scott, 5-2-1, at 1:38 of the sixth round of their scheduled 10-round fight.
In the first round, Shields outlanded Scott, who had a lump on her forehead by the end of the round. Shields took a competitive second round, while both fighters had their moments in the third. In the fourth, Shields used the shoulder roll effectively while landing the harder punches.
Scott had Shields against the ropes during portions of the fifth before Shields came back strongly over the final 30 seconds. In the sixth, Shields hurt Scott badly with a left hook to the chin and drove her into the ropes. Referee Joel Scobie gave Scott a standing eight-count.
Shields immediately attacked after the count and landed a flurry of punches with Scott still in trouble. Scott’s corner threw in the towel, ending the contest.
Bernice Ferreira Defeats Caroline Veyre by Disqualification
WBC super featherweight champion and 2020 Olympian Caroline Veyre, 11-2, of Montreal, Canada, lost by disqualification to IBO champion Bernice “The Badger” Ferreira, 11-0 (4 KOs), of Johannesburg, South Africa, at 1:08 of the eighth round.
Veyre had the edge through the first three rounds. In the fourth, referee Malik Waleed deducted a point from Veyre for holding. Veyre rebounded and had the better of the fifth and sixth rounds.
Waleed deducted another point from Veyre for holding in the seventh. In the eighth, he disqualified Veyre after continued holding and another warning. The decision to end the fight by disqualification was questionable.
Troy Isley Decisions Joseph Hicks
In the co-main event, 2020 U.S. Olympian Troy “Transformer” Isley, 17-0 (6 KOs), of Alexandria, Virginia, defeated Joseph “Sug” Hicks, 12-2 (7 KOs), of Grand Rapids, Michigan, by unanimous decision over 10 rounds.
Hicks had won two of their three amateur fights, giving the professional meeting some history.
Hicks used his jab effectively early, while Isley began finding openings as the fight progressed. In the second round, Hicks caught Isley with a hard right to the chin. Isley responded in the third and began increasing his work rate.
In the fourth, Isley landed a left hook that knocked Hicks off balance. Near the end of the fifth, referee Antonio Mohan deducted a point from Isley for a kidney shot after previously warning him about his punches.
Isley worked effectively to Hicks’ body in the sixth and seventh rounds and gradually took greater control of the fight. By the ninth, Isley was outlanding Hicks, although the fight remained more competitive than the eventual scorecards indicated.
Isley finished strongly enough to secure the decision. The judges scored the fight 97-92 and 96-93 twice.
Atif Oberlton Shuts Out Roamer Alexis Angulo
Light heavyweight southpaw Atif “Lord Pretty Calvo” Oberlton, 17-0 (14 KOs), of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, defeated Roamer Alexis Angulo, 29-5 (24 KOs), by unanimous decision over 10 rounds.
Oberlton controlled the fight from beginning to end against the 42-year-old Angulo. All three judges scored the contest 100-90.
Ashleyann Lozada Decisions Paulette Cuesta
WBC Latino super bantamweight champion and 2024 Olympian Ashleyann “La Máquina” Lozada, 5-0 (1 KO), of Corozal, Puerto Rico, defeated WBO Latino super bantamweight champion Paulette Cuesta, 19-6-1 (4 KOs), of Tijuana, Mexico, by unanimous decision over 10 rounds to win the vacant WBA Gold title.
In the first round, Lozada hurt Cuesta with a left to the body. Lozada drew blood from Cuesta’s nose with a flurry in the second. She continued to have the edge in the fourth, although Cuesta found some success with overhand rights.
Cuesta suffered a cut over her right eyebrow in the sixth. There was contact between their heads, although referee Nate Mann ruled that the cut resulted from a punch.
The cut reopened in the ninth, but Cuesta continued fighting aggressively. Lozada finished the contest strongly in the 10th and secured a clear decision.
The judges scored the fight 99-91 and 100-90 twice.
Daniel Mercado Scores First-Round Knockout
Super welterweight Daniel Mercado, 2-0 (2 KOs), of Pomona, California, knocked out Rahmel “Rahmelatonin” McKinley, 1-5, of Bladenboro, North Carolina, in the first round of their scheduled four-round bout.
Mercado ended the fight with a body shot that McKinley was unable to recover from, giving Mercado his second knockout in as many professional fights.
