He still couldn’t make it.

Dan Rafael reported Saturday that Hilley missed the revised weight and the fight was canceled. His exact weight wasn’t immediately known.

The failed replacements deserve attention, but Mercado’s matchmaking deserves some scrutiny as well.

Why was a 24-year-old talent with Mercado’s ability being matched against the 37-year-old Tagoe in the first place?

Tagoe was thoroughly outboxed by Ryan Garcia in a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision loss in April 2022. He has fought only twice since that defeat and had been inactive for a year, with his previous bout coming in August 2025.

Beating that version of Tagoe wasn’t going to tell anyone much about Mercado.

Mercado recently joined Salita Promotions in partnership with Wynn Records after leaving Matchroom Boxing earlier this year. He wanted greater activity, which makes losing tonight’s fight particularly frustrating. But activity alone isn’t enough.

At 19-0 with 18 knockouts, Mercado needs opponents who force him to develop. He is no longer at the stage where aging fighters coming off long stretches of inactivity do much for his career.

A company such as Zuffa Boxing might have been an interesting home because its model has shown a willingness to make demanding fights rather than spend years protecting records. There is no indication Mercado rejected a Zuffa offer, so that remains purely hypothetical.

What isn’t hypothetical is Mercado’s need for stronger matchmaking. At 24, he has time, but wasting that time knocking over fighters well beneath his level defeats the purpose of staying active.
