Vladimir Guerrero Jr. injury update: Is Blue Jays’ star playing today?

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was evaluated for a concussion after a knee-to-the-head collision with New York shortstop George Lombard Jr. on Aug. 14. The incident forced Guerrero Jr. to leave the game early under protocol during the Blue Jays’ 3-1 victory over the Yankees.

The play unfolded when George Springer hit a sharp bouncer to third base. Yankees third baseman Ryan McMahon fielded the ball and forced out Nathan Lukes at third before firing a quick throw to first.

McMahon’s throw to first was mishandled by Luis García Jr., who lost his glove in the scramble. Seizing the opportunity, Guerrero Jr. dashed toward third base, leaped in an attempt to beat the throw, and was inadvertently kneed in the head mid-air by Lombard Jr. as he slid in safely.

Guerrero’s helmet flew off, but he managed to scramble home to score. Following the hectic play, Guerrero Jr. admitted to having a slight headache and was immediately removed from the game as a precaution.

Guerrero Jr., who had only recently returned to the lineup after recovering from a hamstring injury, is now listed as day-to-day while undergoing concussion protocol. The Blue Jays have not yet provided an update on his status ahead of their Aug. 15 afternoon game against the Yankees.
