There was no comeback or late-game heroics needed by the San Diego Padres against the Milwaukee Brewers in the second game of their three-game series because the Padres exploded for 11 runs on 17 hits in an 11-2 win over the Brewers at Petco Park on Tuesday night. San Diego also secured a series win after winning the first two games against Milwaukee.
The Padres got on the board early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning off Brewers starter Kyle Harrison. The big blow came off the bat of Luis Rengifo who hit a grand slam home run to left field to give San Diego a 5-0 lead. That was all the support Padres starter Walker Buehler would need as the veteran right-hander worked through six innings, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
San Diego continued to add to its run total after Buehler allowed a run in the top of the third to make the score, 5-1. Fernando Tatis Jr. connected on a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the fourth and Luis Campusano connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score, 8-1. The Padres were not done and added three more runs to their total in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a commanding 11-1 lead.
The Brewers were able to scratch another run across in the top of the ninth inning against Griffin Canning, but it was too little too late as the home team went on to a nine-run win. This was a big win for the Padres as both the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Philadelphia Phillies both lost, allowing San Diego to force a three-way tie for the last two National League Wild Card positions.
The Padres will go for the series sweep today at 1:10 p.m.
