Dodgers minor league infielder Joendry Vargas had a productive series for Class-A Ontario on the road last week in Lake Elsinore, and for his efforts on Monday was named California League player of the week.
Vargas had 11 hits in 25 at-bats in his six games for the Tower Buzzers with four doubles, a home run, and a triple, with five runs batted in and four scored, plus two walks and two stolen bases.
Three of his games were of the multi-hit variety, headlined by four hits on Friday night, including a home run and double, with three RBI.
Vargas has a 13-game on-base streak dating back to July 26, during which he’s hitting .397/.417/.586. The 20-year-old played third base and shortstop last week. Most of Vargas’s time this season has come at short, with 65 starts, plus 15 starts at second base and six at third base, plus 13 games as designated hitter.
In 100 games for Ontario this season, Vargas is hitting .287/.328/.438 with a 91 wRC+, 27 doubles, nine home runs, six triples, and 22 stolen bases.
Vargas is the fourth Tower Buzzer to win Cal League player of the week this season, joining Easton Shelton (May 18-24), Jaron Elkins (May 25-31 and June 29-July 5), and Mairo Martinus (June 22-28).
