Chase Shugart blew another game for the Phillies on Saturday and it brought up a topic that I think the Phillies deserve some scorn over.
I know every team needs to have someone to soak up some innings here and there. Shugart has mostly been that guy this year with cameos by Seth Johnson, Kyle Backhus and others. However, with a bullpen that is performing this poorly, there has to be a reason an arm with the kind of stuff that Alex McFarlane possesses isn’t in the majors over a Shugart to have those kinds of innings. That way, when a game gets to extra innings like last night’s, where a runner is on second, at least McFarlane has the stuff to get outs on his own rather than depending on defenses to help him.
So I ask: why isn’t McFarlane in the majors over someone like Shugart?
It is a quandry.
