“Man, that’s CTE at its finest. It’s a bloodbath waiting [to happen],” Crawford said during the post-fight show on DAZN and TNT’s “The Fight.”

While Crawford envisions both men doing serious damage, Navarrete may be the one taking the brunt of it.

Navarrete moved up to 135 pounds in May 2024, dropping a split decision to Denys Berinchyk for the vacant WBO belt. He struggled to find his rhythm against the Ukrainian, looking far removed from the fighter who captured titles at 122, 126 and 130 pounds.

Zepeda presents a completely different style of threat. He gives opponents little time to rest or set their offense. Roach discovered that early as Zepeda stayed in his face and dictated the pace for all 12 rounds.

Navarrete never shies away from trading punches, but slugging with Zepeda at lightweight favors the naturally larger man. Moving up from super featherweight to face a champion who breaks opponents down through sustained volume carries enormous risk.

Top Rank must decide if the reward justifies taking that chance. Navarrete holds the IBF and WBO titles at 130 pounds, where a unification against WBC champion O’Shaquie Foster remains an attractive option.

Top Rank has another route into the lightweight picture. WBO champion Abdullah Mason sat ringside for Zepeda’s win over Roach and is already an obvious choice for a unification bout.

If Top Rank wants one of its champions in with Zepeda, Mason can take the fight without changing divisions. Sending Navarrete back to lightweight after his previous loss is the riskier move, especially against a relentless pressure fighter who would force him to work every minute.
