Yankees news: George Lombard Jr. homers in debut, told to be himself

MLB.com | Brendan Samson: Yesterday was a very cool moment for the Lombard family, as George Jr. made his MLB debut for the Bombers, his younger brother, Jacob, also made his professional debut for the Marlins’ Low-A affiliate. While Mom and Dad Lombard were going to Florida to see Jacob’s debut, they quickly pivoted (with Jacob’s encouragement) after news of the older brother’s MLB debut broke. Even cooler for the family is that both brothers homered yesterday, and while their parents only got to see George’s in person, cameras did catch them watching the younger brother’s bomb on their cell phone.

MLB.com | Bryan Hoch, Jared Greenspan: The organization’s message to their top prospect after his call-up and ahead of his debut was quite simple: “Go be you.” George Lombard Jr. has seen success at every level he’s been, easily earning the Yankees’ top prospect title, and it’s easy to see why. They don’t want him to change anything, just do what he does best and they think success will come. If Monday night was any indication, he’s all ready for the challenge. With a big blast for his first major league hit and a few smooth defensive plays at shortstop, there could be big things in his future.

NJ.com | Adam Zagoria: Anthony Volpe has some things to work on as its clear that he needs to improve his game if he wants to have a future with this team. In order to help his value, the Yankees are planning to get some reps in at second base while he’s in the minors, following his demotion. Aaron Boone spoke about both his and Jasson Domínguez’s demotions and how they were difficult conversations, but opportunities for them to work on things and refine their game so they might be able to earn another shot in the majors.

MLB.com | Jared Greenspan: Heliot Ramos was at the gym for a quick workout when he found out he had been traded to the Yankees. His phone was in his locker but he looked up at the TV in the gym and found out he’s coming east to New York. Even though he had a hitless debut, Ramos talked about how cool it is to wear the pinstripes and how he’s willing to play whatever role is necessary in order to help the club. While not the flashiest acquisition, it’s still nice to see players who want to be here and hopefully a change of scenery will help him find some success.
